There are numerous festivals that go along with Nepal’s diversity of cultures and traditions. The majority of the population in Nepal, in particular, is Hindu. We then have the Dashain festival. Dashain is the Nepalese holiday that is most frequently observed throughout the nation.

Hindus are not the only ones who can experience it; people from various origins and cultures can as well. The biggest and longest festival in Nepal is called Dashain. Other names for Dashain include Dasain, Vijaya Dashami, and Dashera (in India).

People celebrate Dashain with the same fervour and excitement, despite the fact that the names vary from location to place.

Dashain is essentially a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. This holiday serves as a reminder that goodness always wins out over evil. This celebration denotes harmony, the triumph of truth, and the beginning of happiness. It is the most fortunate event, and it lasts for a whole two weeks.

Workers from Nepal who are employed overseas enjoy extended vacations and visit their families to celebrate the holiday. The celebration, which begins during the Shukla Paksha (bright lunar fortnight) of the month of Ashwin and ends on Purnima, the full moon, takes place in September or October.

The first, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, and fifteenth days are the most significant of the fifteen days on which it is observed. The festival of Dashain in Hindu mythology symbolises the triumph of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, who had terrorised the world where the gods dwell (Devaloka).

Mahanavami is the name of the ninth day of Dashain. On this day, people worship the creator god Vishvakarman since it is said that all the things that enable us to survive should be preserved in good health.

Therefore, on this special day, automobiles and other equipment are offered with chicken blood, and prayers are said in the hopes of being safe wherever one may be. The most anticipated day for everyone is Bijaya Dashami on the tenth day of Dashain.

It’s a special day when people dress up nicely and visit their superiors and neighbours to show respect and receive blessings. The younger people had Tika (a mixture of yoghurt, grains, and colours) applied to their foreheads by the elders.

They are typically red in colour since that colour represents the blood that binds the family. Along with blessing the younger generation, they also distribute cash (Dakshina). They also placed green plants grown from hybrid seeds of rice, maize, barley, and other plants on the forehead after applying the tika. Jamara, a green plant, is utilised in Dashain as a flower.

People gather during this happy holiday to eat, drink, and rejoice to their hearts’ content.

They forget their worries and indulge themselves in joy. The schools, offices, workplaces are closed and people come and celebrate the festival with their kiths and kins. The most excited for this festival are also kids. Some get new clothes and eat delicious foods, they get to travel around places to visit their relatives and enjoy the livelihood.

This celebration goes on till the 15th day of Dashain where it ends. The great festival of Nepal ends like this, with great enthusiasm and joy people wait for the next year for the Dashain celebration.

Everything, including Dashain, has a dark side. People think Dashain is a festival for the affluent, thus everything they do should be affluent. It’s not necessary to spend a lot of money to get new clothes, jewellery, or gifts.

Festivals must be joyfully observed while being celebrated with what we have. Additionally, people engage in extensive drinking and gambling. The number of sacrifices made during this event is even more.

People have also protested and launched campaigns calling on the government to stop offering animals as sacrifices and start offering fruits in their place. Dashain should be celebrated with tremendous zeal, without interference from societal ills, and malpractices.
