Tihar Brief Info

The greatest and most well-known celebration in Nepal is called Tihar. Tihar follows Dashain immediately. It lasts for five days and occurs in the month of Kartik (October to November according to the solar calendar). This festival celebrates itself in a special way.

The five days of this festival are dedicated to praising and honouring various animals and deities. The first day of Tihar is referred to as Kaag puja (crow worship).

Cleaning is done to the homes, and garlands of Saya Patri (marigolds) and Makhamali (Gomphrena globosa) flowers are used to decorate the windows and doorways.

People frequently paint little footprint tracks to and from their rooms’ entrances as a way to invite Laxmi inside. We can observe both elegant lights and lovely, sparkling Diyo (oil lamp) lights at night. To get Goddess Laxmi’s attention, this is done.

The Gai puja night is a true spectacle to behold. Beginning on this day, a group of people—especially kids and teenagers—get together and go from house to house singing the traditional songs Deusi and Bhailos while also making money.

People who attend these traditional songs make an offering of money by giving a certain amount. Delicious Sel Rotis, fruits, and rice grains are further potential offerings. Sel Rotis are traditional handcrafted circle appetisers. The nights get livelier starting on the night of Gai Puja.
